first day

Well, the first day is over. It was enjoyable, for the most part. We had an assembly during which the staff introduced itself by departments. The English department changed its plan at the last minute, and had an Egyptian student fluent in Arabic saying something (in Arabic) about each teacher--something not very nice--and then that teacher gave a translation. For example, Miss Roukema said, "I'm the best English teacher and she doesn't know why I teach only only English class." I was last and started speaking to the student in Arabic. She was quite surprised, and we all laughed.

I was amused today watching the students. Many of them are to be trying to be oh so cool. I can see what's going on in their minds--yet they think they're being so subtle. There's a girl from Korea in my advisary (kind of like homeroom) who is incredibly shy--she's only been here for 8 months! I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to not understand what's going on at school. I've been in situations where I don't speak the language other people are speaking around me, but I've never had to do school in another language. Tough stuff.
